A Prototype for Health and Wellness in Remote Regions of India

Innovative, low cost models of care delivery are critical to supporting the health and wellness of populations in remote areas of India, where some people have never seen a doctor before in their lives. Care needs in these areas vary widely and are most successfully addressed with both primary care and community wellness programs, clinic visits and in-home care. A pilot project is currently underway with the intention of setting cogent precedents for the expansion of healthcare facilities in remote regions of India. Optimize Health Clinic is the first facility designed for this project.

In designing the clinic, we focused on establishing a modular, efficient and flexible building that could easily be expanded in the future. Adaptability was a top priority due to the challenges associated with the implementation of a pilot facility, in which patient traffic and conditions that will need to be treated are uncertain. For example, patient rooms are organized in clusters of three, so that two can be “flipped” for exams by the nurse, and the third can be used as needed for procedures, conferences with health coaches, or for any other need that may arise. Incorporating the culture of the community, in part by featuring local artists’ murals on both interior and exterior walls, generates a sense of pride and ownership in a building that needs to provide the welcome and comfort of a “community center.” A community room and outdoor play area can be accessed for outreach programs when the clinic itself is closed.

Ultimately, Optimize Health Clinic stands as a symbol of India’s progress towards innovative and community based healthcare and will ultimately lead to improved health in India on the local, regional, and national level.
